Nukebox vs XElectron vs Nixplay: Which Digital Photo Frame Should You Buy in India?

If you are buying a WiFi digital photo frame in India, you will run into three names: XElectron, which dominates the search results; Nixplay, the big international brand; and Nukebox, which is us. We sell one of them, so read this with that in mind — but we have tried to be straight about where each one genuinely wins, including where we don't.

• Buy XElectron if price is your main criterion. At 10″ and 15.6″ they are roughly half our price, and they work.
• Buy Nixplay if you are outside India, or you specifically want that brand and are willing to deal with import and support from abroad.
• Buy Nukebox if you want your own software rather than a third-party app, a larger frame than anyone else sells in India, recycled materials, and warranty terms written down before you order.

There is no way to dress this up: XElectron is significantly cheaper at every size where we both compete. If your budget is ₹6,000 and you want a 10″ WiFi frame, we do not have a product for you, and theirs is a reasonable one. The rest of this article is about what the difference buys.

The software question

This is the largest real difference between the two Indian options, and most buyers only discover it after the frame arrives.

XElectron frames run Frameo, a third-party app made by a Danish company that also powers dozens of other white-label frames worldwide. It works, and its ubiquity is a genuine advantage — if a relative already uses a Frameo frame, they already have the app. The trade-off is that the frame's software roadmap, servers and privacy policy belong to a company neither you nor the frame brand controls, and feature requests go to a vendor with no particular stake in the Indian market.

Nukebox frames run NukeOS, which we build ourselves. That means shared family albums, smart framing that auto-crops and colour-balances each photo, sleep schedules, auto brightness, and free over-the-air updates for the life of the frame — shipped by us, on our schedule, with support in our own time zone. It also means that if something is broken, there is one company to hold responsible rather than two.

Neither approach charges a subscription for core sharing.

Where Nixplay sits

Nixplay is a strong product and the best-known name globally. In India it is effectively not sold: there is no official India storefront, Amazon.in listings are sparse and intermittent, and the Indian price lists floating around are years out of date. Buying one usually means importing — which brings customs duty, a warranty administered from abroad, and support hours that do not line up with an Indian evening.

If you are shopping from the US, UK or Australia, Nixplay deserves your shortlist. If you are shopping from Delhi, it is a frustrating way to buy a photo frame.

So which should you actually buy?

Budget under ₹7,000. XElectron. We would rather say that than pretend otherwise.

A gift you want to feel like a gift. This is where the price gap earns itself — bezel finish, matte anti-glare panel, packaging and the fact that setup is genuinely three minutes for a non-technical recipient. Our Heritage 10 in wood is the most-gifted frame we make, usually for parents and grandparents.

A large frame for a wall. At 21.5″, Gallery 22 has no Indian competitor at the time of writing. If you want gallery scale, it is the only option here.

Corporate or bulk gifting. Both brands will quote you. We publish our terms — volume tiers, branded packaging, GST invoicing, lead times — on our corporate gifting page, along with a tree-planting certificate for CSR reporting.

You live outside India. Nixplay or Aura. We ship within India only.

Questions people ask before choosing

Can family abroad send photos to any of these? Yes, all three. Anyone invited to the album can send from anywhere with an internet connection.

Do any of them need a subscription? Not for core sharing. Some brands sell optional cloud tiers; every frame here works fully without one.

Do they have to stay plugged in? Yes. None of these are battery frames — mains power, always.

What about resolution? At 10″ both Indian options use 800 × 1280 IPS panels. At 15.6″ and above, both are Full HD. The visible difference at these sizes comes from the panel finish and colour calibration more than the pixel count — a glossy screen looks like a tablet, a matte anti-glare one looks like a print.
